I attended a political forum last evening. It was for the Sheriff candidates for Mayes, Craig, and Delaware counties. It was held in the Christian church by county line road going south to Langley.
The moderator announced that Delaware county participants chose not to be there or had other commitments. There were two from Mayes county and the incumbent, Jimmie Sooter was there from Craig county. The other candidate from Craig county didn't show. He must have committed to being there because his name was on a placard at the candidate table, but he was no show Joe.
New building that houses a drugstore. Location is on the corner
of West Illinois and South Scraper St. The original building
burned a couple of years ago. This new building really spiffed
up this old tired corner for downtown Vinita.
I wonder if he knows George Jones? Ole Possum? Nah! Don't think so. Maybe Joe had a prior commitment or maybe he was afraid of what questions would be asked.
The Mayes county sheriff candidates were asked several questions. After listening to some of their questions, I decided that Craig county has a good sheriff and tightly run ship compared to some of the issues that were raised by Mayes county residents.
One person ask Sheriff Sooter about speed traps in Ketchum, OK. He answered with, "If you speed, then you get trapped." The person asking the question laughed too, so who knows?
This is an old map at City Hall
Sheriff Sooter did speak about the drug problem and how they are joining forces with other agencies to combat the crimes of drug trafficking.
Sheriff Sooter was also asked if the county had a prisoner work program and he said they did allow some prisoners to work only if they have reached trustee status. They are given two days off their sentence for every one day of work they perform. He stated that the prisoners did like the program.
That would also cut down on county expenses, but that's just my humble opinion.
All in all it was a positive forum with no booing and clapping allowed, so I remained dignified and in my seat.
Too bad candidate Johnson didn't show up. I would like to have heard him answer some questions. Wonder if he'll show up at the next forum hosted by the Vinita Chamber of Commerce on June 4th at Pizza Hut at noon? My moneys says no, he won't. Hope he does.
A quick program note: The pictures above have nothing to do with the subject, I just wanted to share some photos about Vinita, Ok.
Until Later,
